Week 1 at Pate!

Jared has successfully completed his first week at Pate, participating in 6 hours of therapy a day with occupational, speech and physical therapy twice a day. We have had to allow some time for adjustments and for the staff to get to know Jared this past week, and we are hoping that this week goes smoothly. the biggest hurdle seems to be people calling him "JARED," as many of you know Jared is his middle name, which he has gone by his entire life, but on paper and every time we move to a new place we start over with people calling him "Michael," which he never responds to, so there's that learning curve.

Pate is a very different environment than what we had gotten used to at BIR, so we are all learning to make some adjustments to his new surroundings. And for those of you that know me, change and patience are not my strong suit. God give me the patience to be kind to the new staff that are getting to know me and Jared.

After his full day of therapy Jared is pretty worn out in the afternoon, he has been doing well in his sessions as his new therapists are trying to find his new baseline of things and what he is coming from Baylor with. Physical therapy is continuing to work on walking, and the sit to stand movement with him. Occupational therapy has been working on reaching for things downward and across his body as well as working on that right side of his body that is still very weak. Speech therapy is working on his swallowing and communicating with Jared,

As his body is adjusting to the vigorous amount of therapy and the anti-seizure meds we are seeing him a little more active than a week ago. Weekends are definitely for resting around the ranch. This past weekend Jared did more napping and watching tv and that was well deserved after what he has accomplished this week.

We did get to have some fun meeting some new friends out on the ranch, and got a few photos with them.

This week we just ask for continued prayers for patience and strength for Jared in his 30 hours of therapy this week. We pray that his brain and body continue to heal, that his right side gets stronger and gains more movement and range of motion. We pray for communication, that he may find his voice and be able to speak unafraid with us and his therapy teams. We ask that his swallow continue to strengthen so that he can get that feeding tube out and be able to start eating real food again. And also that he continue to make stride with walking, so he can move toward getting out of that wheelchair.
